Hypothermia Deaths Increasing in the US

| February 20, 2015 Comment

Hypothermia deaths are increasing in the US, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The current extreme weather in most of the country is exacerbating the problem.

Hypothermia is a dangerous drop in body temperature due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, which, if not treated immediately, can lead to organ failure and death. People who are at risk include the elderly, the mentally ill, drug addicts and those who live alone. Local agencies are doing a lot to address cold weather emergencies by opening shelters but the CDC says that more needs to be done. The report suggests that agencies should focus on education and improve their communication networks so they can reach the most vulnerable population at the right time.

People should be aware of the symptoms of hypothermia so they can take precautionary measures. Symptoms include confusion or sleepiness, slowed or slurred speech, shallow breathing, weak pulse, slow reactions and poor control over body movements. To protect against hypothermia, doctors recommend wearing layers of warm clothing, and covering their head and extremities, and getting indoors as frequently as possible to warm up.
