Malnourished Children More Prone to BP Later

New research shows that malnourished children may be more prone to high blood pressure later in life. Lack of nutrition during the first five years can affect the development of heart and blood flow in adulthood. Hypertension can lead to heart disease and stroke.

The study looked at 116 adults in Jamaica who were malnourished as children, and found that, when compared with adults who were not malnourished, they had higher diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) reading. Their hearts couldn’t pump blood efficiently.

The study, published in the journal Hypertension, shows merely a link between malnourishment in childhood and hypertension in adulthood, and does not establish a cause and effect relationship. More….
