Mother Sentenced to Prison for Giving Daughter Abortion Pills
A Pennsylvania mother was sentenced to 12 to 18 months in prison for violating a state law that requires abortions to be performed at a hospital. She was also fined $1,000 and is required to complete 40 hours of community service when released.
The mother, Jennifer Ann Whalen, who is a nursing aide, obtained the abortion pills online and gave them to her teenage daughter because she didn’t want to have the child. Whalen told authorities that there was no abortion clinic nearby, and she couldn’t take her daughter to the hospital as she didn’t have health insurance. Authorities found out about what she had done when she ended up taking her daughter to the hospital for treatment for severe cramping and bleeding.
