New Device for Treating High Blood Pressure

New Device for Treating High Blood Pressure – UK researchers found that a small device the size of a paper clip can help reduce high blood pressure and may be a viable option in cases that don’t respond to regular medication.

The device is called a coupler, and is made by ROX Medical in California. The device is inserted in a patients groin and it creates a chamber between the artery and vein in the upper thigh which appears to help lower resistance and bring blood pressure down.

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London, which led the study, tested the device on 42 patients with high blood pressure who had not responded to medication. When they compared the results with patients who received regular hypertension medication, scientists found significant reduction in blood pressure after six months. But in 29% of patients, swelling developed in the leg in which the coupler was inserted, and needed to be taken care of with a stent.

Researchers say the device is promising and more research is need to study the safety of the device and to better understand how the device works.
