No More Wine for Vegetarians and Vegans

| May 7, 2014 Comment

Vegetarians and vegans may not want to drink wine any more. According to new reports, wine may contain trace amounts of egg, fish bladder, and milk.

Many winemakers use isinglass, a collagen from fish bladders, to remove impurities during the wine-making process. They also use casein, a milk protein, or egg white. All these ingredients are non-vegetarian and non-vegan.

Though there are many wines in the market that don’t use these ingredients, there’s no way of knowing which ones are vegan and vegetarian-safe drinks. Labeling laws in the US don’t require alcohol makers to list their ingredients on the labels. The best option for vegans and vegetarians is to look for “unfined” and “unfiltered” wines and beers.
