Onion Chutney
Onion Chutney is a quick and easy condiment to serve with dosa, idli, and vada. With a spicy and sweet-sour taste, it adds a punch to bland but healthy foods like idli.

Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 3-5 red chillies (adjust to taste)
- 2 tbsp chana dal (split bengal gram/yellow lentil)
- 1/4 tsp tamarind paste
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
For Seasoning
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
Preparation
- Chop the onion into big pieces.
- Heat oil in a small pan, add add the chana dal and fry until golden and remove in a bowl. In the same oil, fry the red chillies for a few seconds until crisp and set aside.
- Add the onions and saute on medium heat until translucent, and remove in a bowl.
- In a blender, grind the onions, chillies, and chana dal along with tamarind paste and salt to a smooth paste.
- Heat oil in a small pan for the seasoning. Add the mustard seeds and fry until they start to pop and pour over the onion chutney.
- Serve the onion chutney with idli, dosa or vada.
