Onion Chutney is a quick and easy condiment to serve with dosa, idli, and vada. With a spicy and sweet-sour taste, it adds a punch to bland but healthy foods like idli.

Servings:4-6
Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • 3-5 red chillies (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tbsp chana dal (split bengal gram/yellow lentil)
  • 1/4 tsp tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil

For Seasoning

  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds

Preparation

  1. Chop the onion into big pieces.
  2. Heat oil in a small pan, add add the chana dal and fry until golden and remove in a bowl. In the same oil, fry the red chillies for a few seconds until crisp and set aside.
  3. Add the onions and saute on medium heat until translucent, and remove in a bowl.
  4. In a blender, grind the onions, chillies, and chana dal along with tamarind paste and salt to a smooth paste.
  5. Heat oil in a small pan for the seasoning. Add the mustard seeds and fry until they start to pop and pour over the onion chutney.
  6. Serve the onion chutney with idli, dosa or vada.
