Poor People Try to Lose Weight in Unhealthy Ways

A new study shows that poor people try to lose weight in unhealthy ways. Young people trying to lose extra pounds often resort to skipping meals and going without food for long periods of time, which is not the healthiest way to lose weight.

Researchers looked at data on 9,000 people between 1999 to 2008, who self-reported their incomes and efforts to lose weight. Recommendations for healthiest ways to lose weight included eating less fat and sweets, drinking more water and exercising more.

Researchers found that adults making less than $20, 000 a year, were 50% less likely to exercise, 42% less likely to drink more water, and 25% less likely to reduce their consumption of fatty foods. Youth from the low-income group were 33% less likely to exercise than the higher income groups, and 1.7 times more likely to skip meals, and 2.3 times more likely to fast.

Researchers couldn’t figure out why people from low-income groups didn’t drink more water, which should be affordable to do, and conclude that other stresses could be preventing them from implementing even the low-cost strategies for losing weight. More….
