Subway Removing Chemical from Bread

Thanks to a food blogger who exposed the fact that Subway (as well as other restaurant chains) use in their bread, the chemical, azodicarbonamide, has all but phased it out of their bread. The chemical came to be known as “yoga mat chemical” as it’s found in yoga mats. Though it’s approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used in foods as a bleaching agent and dough conditioner, it’s not approved in many countries.

According to a Subway spokesperson, the chain started phasing out the chemical last year and should be complete in a week. He insisted that this change was not the result of public pressure but a part of the restaurant chain’s efforts to improve their products. They had earlier started reducing sodium and also removed high-fructose corn syrup from their bread.

The blogger who started the petition against Subway says that the chain uses other unhealthy ingredients like caramel coloring and yeast extract which should be removed. More….
