Type 2 Diabetes May Shrink Brain

Type 2 diabetes may shrink the brain, according to researchers. Though researchers knew that diabetes could damage the brain, they thought it was because of blood vessel damage. However, the new study shows that diabetes also leads to degeneration of brain cells, more like Alzheimer’s. The shrinkage is related to how the brain uses excess sugar.

The study found that the longer the participants had diabetes, the more the volume of the brain shrinkage, particularly in grey matter, which is associated with muscle control, and sight, hearing, speech, memory, and decision-making.
