US health agency says nearly 6.5 million people in HealthCare.gov plans – the US government health agency said on Tuesday nearly 6.5 million people either selected or were enrolled in a new individual insurance plan for 2015 on the HealthCare.gov website through Dec. 26.

HealthCare.gov sells plans for 37 states while the remaining states sell individual insurance on their own online exchanges and have tallied the data. Providing a first look at enrollment nationwide, the government agency said these states have enrolled more than 600,000 people.

The US Department of Health and Human Services said California and New York have had over 161 thousand new enrollees but did not provide data on any re-enrollments. Another seven states reported that over 153 thousand people had selected a plan or actively re-enrolled, but did not provide figures for automatically re-enrolled consumers.

Those of you who would like to enroll can still do so for the coming year. The Open Enrollment period for 2015 health care coverage is November 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015. If you haven’t enrolled in 2015 coverage by February 15, you generally can’t buy Marketplace health coverage for 2015 unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
