White House seeking to reverse New York, New Jersey’s Ebola quarantine orders: NYT

The New York Times reported on Sunday, the White House is pressuring the governors of New York and New Jersey to reverse their orders imposing a quarantine on all medical workers returning from West Africa who had contacts with Ebola patients.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made the decisions on Friday after a doctor who treated patients in Guinea came back to New York infected.

Quoting an unnamed administration official, the paper said “top administration officials have been speaking with Mr. Cuomo daily and have also been in touch with Mr. Christie, trying to get them to rescind the order.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, had earlier expressed his concern that the mandatory quarantine may deter healthcare workers from helping out in Ebola-stricken countries.

Any quarantine orders should be based on sound medical grounds. Ebola victims should have the facility of people willingly travelling to help out in West Africa. On return, precautions should be taken to eliminate the spread of the deadly disease. Please try to avoid this fear psychosis of Ebola being spread to other residents. Containment of Ebola by whatever means should remain a top global priority.
