WHO Says Ebola drugs on Way, Virus Reaches Mali and New York – As the row grows about whether or not the Ebola outbreak could have been contained earlier, and whether or not pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession have been dragging their heels on tropical medicines in general, there’s news drugs could soon be available. Two treatments are ready for trial.

“We are not waiting for the results of phase 1, so the clinical trials which are currently ongoing and put in place by all partners will start efficacy trials in affected countries as early as December 2014,” said the World Health Organisation’s Director General for Health Systems and Innovation Marie Paule Kieny.

The spotlight has now moved to Mali, which has reported its first Ebola case and is scrambling to limit the effects of the virus spreading beyond the capital Bamako.

“The health authorities say they’ve traced 43 contacts the grandmother and her little girl made while travelling. Among them 10 health workers are being checked,” said the WHO’s Fadela Chaib.

Meanwhile Ebola has made it to New York, where a doctor back from west Africa has tested positive after admitting himself to hospital on Thursday after recognizing the symptoms.
On Friday evening he was reportedly talking with friends on the phone and experiencing few problems.
