How to Make Great Vegetarian Burgers

| May 4, 2014 Comment

Many people are turning to vegetarian eating to become healthier and some to aid in weight loss. People who fail and return to eating meats say that a vegetarian diet is “boring”, or that they began to feel weak.

This can be avoided by doing research on eating vegetarian and making sure that one gets the proper protein intake.

There is no reason for a vegetarian diet to be boring; you can still enjoy burgers, enchiladas, potpies. The dishes have different ingredients, but they taste just as yummy – sometimes better!

A trip to the local market will reveal vegetarian pepperoni, vegetarian Canadian bacon, vegetarian lunchmeats, as well as vegetarian sausage links and hot dogs. Try different brands to find your favorites.

One of the best ways to enjoy vegetarian cuisine is to learn how to make it yourself. Of course you can have burgers delivered, but think of how much better they will taste if you make them.

The following is a very basic recipe for veggie burgers. Use this recipe as a starting point. As you start to branch out in your vegetarian lifestyle, you can start to add and subtract items to find your favorite mix.

Ingredients

  • 1 Can of black beans or pinto beans drained and rinsed
  • ¼ to ½ of an onion, chopped
  • ½ bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tsp corn starch
  • 2 cloves garlic peeled and chopped
  • 1 tsp limejuice
  • ½ C seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • Optional: 1 tsp hot sauce

Preparation

  1. Mash the drained and rinsed beans in a large bowl to a paste consistency.
  2. Place the onion, bell pepper, lime juice, corn starch and garlic into a food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
  3. Add this to the mashed beans and mix well. Combine the breadcrumbs and chili powder, mix together and slowly add to the bean mixture. Add hot sauce if desired. The mixture should be sticky and hold together.
  4. Divide the mixture into 4 patties and cook. Patties may be fried, baked or barbequed. When barbequing, place the patties on a sheet of aluminum foil to cook.

Enjoy your freshly made veggie burgers and save the food delivery for another day.
