Alzheimer’s Preventable in a Third of the Cases

Alzheimer’s is preventable in a third of the cases, according to a University of Cambridge study.

Researchers identified seven important risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, which include, diabetes, midlife hypertension, midlife obesity, physical inactivity, depression, smoking, and poor education. A third of these are because of lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise and smoking, which can be modified.

Physical exercise can also reduce risk for diabetes and hypertension, and researchers calculated that if each risk factor can be reduced by 10%, almost 9 million cases of Alzheimer’s can be prevented by 2050.

According to current estimatess, almost 106 million people will be affected by the disease by 2050. More….
