Exercise Important for Stroke Survivors

Exercise is important for stroke survivors, according to a statement released by the American Heart Association (AHA), and it can help them with their normal daily activities. If they don’t exercise, their physical and mental health deteriorates, prevents them from going about their normal activities, and even increases the risk of a second stroke.

The AHA recommends that doctors should prescribe exercise and physical activity for stroke survivors. Research shows that a simple activity like walking can help improve cardiovascular fitness, walking ability, memory and can also reduce depression. Overall, physical exercise can improve their quality of life.

AHA also suggests that stroke victims should continue to receive support after they’re discharged from hospital and barriers to exercise such as depression, cost, lack of motivation, and social support should be removed. More….
