Memory Not Affected in All Types of Alzheimer’s

Memory loss is usually associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but there’s a type of Alzheimer’s where memory is not affected. Known as hippocampal sparing Alzheimer’s disease (HpSpAD), it affects personality and behavior, and patients can have language, speaking, and reasoning problems, and difficulty moving. This is because it affects different areas of the brain, such as the regions near the temples, behind the forehead, and top of the head over the ears. In the common type of Alzheimer’s, the hippocampal region, associated with memory, is affected.

Researchers, who studied nearly 2,000 brains of Alzheimer’s patients, found that this type of Alzheimer’s is more common in men than in women, and patients are affected at an early age, the average age being 59. Symptoms became worse quickly, with patients dying soon after showing symptoms of HpSpAD. More….
