Reducing Sugar in Food Products Can Help Reverse Obesity Crisis

Reducing Sugar in Food Products Can Help Reverse Obesity Crisis – Britain’s health experts are saying that if food manufacturers can reduce sugar content in processed foods by 30%, the obesity epidemic in Britain could be reversed in five years.

Health experts and academicians in Britain are launching a campaign called Action on Sugar, and asking the food industry to reduce sugar in food products. A 30% reduction in sugar can reduce people’s daily calorie intake by 100 calories. They also want companies to stop advertising sugary drinks and snacks to children, as sugar can be as addictive and dangerous to health as alcohol. Obesity and overweight children are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health problems.

The campaign also wants the government to impose a fine on companies that don’t comply with sugar reduction, or to impose a Sugar Tax.

According to an analysis from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, 67% of men and 57% of women in the UK are overweight or obese. Obesity among children and adolescents is growing, with 26% of boys and 29% of girls being overweight or obese, compared to 17.5% and 21% in 1980.
