Some Insomniacs May Be Bed-Time Procrastinators

Some Insomniacs May Be Bed-Time Procrastinators – According to a new study conducted by researchers at Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, Utrecht University in The Netherlands, in some cases, insomnia could be the result of reluctance to go to bed.

Researchers say that bedtime procrastination is a real problem, and define it as the inability of some people to go to bed at the intended time even when there’s nothing preventing them from doing so. The behavior is associated with poor self-control and self-regulation.

Participants for the study were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (www.MTurk.com), which is an online “marketplace for work” that can be used for research. Two-hundred and three participants completed a survey that asked them questions about demographics and their sleep schedules, fatigue levels, and if they went to bed on time. Participants were also rated for self-control, conscientiousness, impulsivity, and action control.

Researchers conclude that bed-time procrastination is a real and unique problem leading to insufficient sleep and related health issues. While many of us put off undesirable tasks, sleep is usually not one of them. So researchers say that it’s probably because some people don’t want to quit whatever it is they’re doing, and not necessarily because they don’t want to sleep.

Researchers suggest using strategies that don’t require effort as solutions to this unique problem. These strategies could include timers on televisions to turn them off or alarms on phone, anything that will get people out of their “zombie” zone that keeps them occupied in some activity even when it’s time to sleep.
